West Morris narrowly falls to Kent Place

CHESTER -- West Morris had one minute to rip itself from defeat's grubby grasp. Then the clock ran out.

The Highlanders' missed opportunity proved fatal in Saturday's 13-12 home loss to Kent Place. After Sophia Gouraige netted Kent's go-ahead score, West Morris controlled the Dragons' zone for the game's last 61 seconds, failing to convert.

Jori Procaccini and the Highlanders' offense weren't to blame. Procaccini, a senior midfielder, netted a game-high five goals while Lindsay Sullivan added a hat trick to the loss.

Procaccini chalked the loss up to "mistakes."

"We felt like this is a team we could keep up with," Procaccini said. "We definitely made mistakes. This is something we need to build off of."

Elaine Welch and Gouraige scored four goals each for the Dragons (7-2). Carolyn Bradley had two goals in the win.

West Morris (6-3) scrapped through five two-goal deficits to take an 11-10 lead off Procaccini's free position score with 11:21 left. Forty seconds later, Welch snatched away the advantage with a shot up the middle, then put her team ahead, 12-11, at 8:10.

Despite a game-tying shot from Eleni Kozas with 3:59 to go, West Morris fell behind for good on Gouraige's final goal.

"We need to come back strong," said Highlanders senior attacker Jenna Scheibling, who had two assists. "We have a tendency to fall behind and play catch-up for the rest of the game."

West Morris, which boast at least four seniors planning to play college lacrosse, is no stranger to nailbiters. They've lost three games by four goals total.

"We're there," Highlanders head coach Rob Herman said. "It's maybe a dropped pass or a missed scoring opportunity, but we're there."

Attacker Margaret Allen, who had two helpers, and Kozas sank a pair of goals each.

Things looked bleak at the start for West Morris, which trailed, 3-1, seven minutes in. After Allen and Procaccini scored goals to tie the contest, Kent was in front by as many as three before closing out the half, 8-6.

Sloppy passing plagued the Highlanders throughout the first half.

"I think we got flustered," Scheibling said. "But once we calmed down, everything cleaned up."

Herman's squad was tighter in the second half. Following a quick Kent score, West Morris netted three straight. Procaccini wrapped goals around an Allen score to lock the game at 9. Procaccini tied the game again at 13:17 before giving the Highlanders a lead they enjoyed for less than a minute.

"Some calls didn't go our way," Procaccini said. "We just have to clean up on our passing game.

As the final seconds in a deadlocked match ticked away, Tara O'Malley of Summit finally decided to do something about it.

"I just knew that it was time to go. I've been working hard on that play. The coaches told me to go for the goal when I'm behind the net," O'Malley said.

O'Malley executed the crease-roll play perfectly, taking on a defender on turning on the left post to fire in a shot over the goalie for the game-winning goal with just four seconds remaining to give unbeaten Summit an 8-7 victory over West Morris yesterday as Summit christened its turf field with a triumph.

"This sets the tone for the rest of the season," said O'Malley, the game's high scorer with three goals. "We're taking things day by day, and this was another day's challenge. But we wouldn't have won without our defense today. That's the backbone of our team."

Sophomore goalie Sarah Weber of Summit (3-0) had a big day with 14 saves against the strong West Morris attack. She also was aided by the goalie's best friend -- the post -- as West Morris hit the pipes five times.

"I told the girls if you're hitting the posts, you're shooting it at the right spots," said West Morris coach Rob Herman. "It's a tough loss, but I told them to stay strong. It's not a state championship match. We'll leave it here and focus on our next game against Columbia (Tuesday)."

West Morris (1-2), coming off a 10-8 loss to powerhouse West Essex last Thursday, appeared to take control of the game midway in the second half when it scored three straight goals for a 7-5 lead.

After O'Malley scored from behind the cage for a 5-4 Summit lead, senior Leslie Connelly tied it for West Morris at 20:01. Only 10 seconds later, Connelly controlled the draw and fed junior Kaitlyn Leidl to make it 6-5 at 19:51. Six minutes later, junior Meghan Leyson got loose in the middle on a pass from senior Lindsay Sullivan to make it 7-5.

But Summit cut it to 7-6 at the 8:04 mark as O'Malley scored again, this time on an assist from senior Kathleen Lyons, who added two goals and an assist. A free-position shot into the left side of the cage by junior Suzanne Bell evened the game at 7-7 with 5:05 to play.

"Tara O'Malley is a leader who wanted the ball on her stick and she delivered," said Summit's new coach Rob Grella, a former boys lacrosse assistant at the school. "I'm happy we knew who our crunch-time player is. We learned a lot today.

"She's been doing that every day at practice. She's taking everything in."
